When it first flew, it was considered way ahead of it's time in flight control, avionics integration and cockpit features. But today's processors are a hundred times more powerful than those available in the 1970's and yet, the F-16 has been able to adapt to the new technologies as they come on stream. In fact, the F-16 is so successful that it is envisaged being in service until well into the 21st century.

The Ultimate History Of The Boeing B17 Bomber DVDRip

The Boeing B-17 ‘Flying Fortress' has come to symbolize the United States' contribution to the air war in Europe during the Second World War.

From 1943 until the end of the war, the Flying Fortresses of the Eighth Air Force became a familiar site over Eastern England as they set off on yet another daylight raid, often deep into the heart of Nazi Germany. Many never returned for thousans of men were killed or wounded during these raids.

The B-17 became known as the Flying Fortress as she bristled with machine guns - up to 13 in the later models. The idea was that by flying in tight boxes the formations could pour an impenetrable hail of fire on attacking fighters. Like most combat theories it did not survive first contact with the enemy's aircraft. Different levels of skill and experience meant that the formations soon opened up, allowing the Luftwaffe's fighters to pick off stragglers one by one.

This programme includes rare colour archive showing the design and building processes of the B17 and its operational record using actual combat footage. We also take a close look at one of the few airworthy survivors, the famous ‘Sally B' which remains one of the most popular attractions on the air show scene today.

The Ultimate History Of The Messerschmitt DVDRip

The company founded by Willi Messerschmitt was responsible for designing two of the most significant aircraft of the second world war: the BF 109 and the ME 262.
In this programme, we look at the development of the Bf 109 which flew in all theatres of conflict in which the Luftwaffe was involved. More Bf 109s were built than any other fighter of the era. After the war, the Spanish Air Force continued to operate them but powered by the engine of its great wartime adversary the spitfire's Rolls Royce Merlin.

The programme also features the ME 262, the world's first operational jet fighter. That fact alone should be enough to guarantee it's place in the history books but there were other aspects of its design that make the ME262 one of the greatest combat aircraft of all time. It had swept wings and flying tail both of which were to become the norm in combat aircraft for decades to come. But the ME 262 came into the war just too late to make a significant contribution, its production bedevilled by shortages of raw materials and dislocated schedules due to the Allies' bombing campaign.

Other aircraft featured include the Bf110 which was the world's first fighter designed specifically as a bomber escort and the ME 163 Komet, the extraordinary rocket-powered interceptor.

IMAX : Fighter Pilot – Operation Red Flag

Captain John ‘Otter’ Stratton is a young American fighter pilot who flies the F-15 Eagle, arguably the most potent and successful fighter plane ever built. He was eight years old when he decided to become a pilot. It wasn’t a tough decision — his grandfather was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and 11 air medals as a fighter pilot in the Second World War. As far as John was concerned, his grandfather had won the war all by himself in his beautiful blue Corsair. His grandfather was a hero and he intended to follow in his footsteps.

At Red Flag, the international training exercise for the air forces of allied countries, hundreds of pilots meet for the most challenging flying of their careers. Red Flag is the final tune-up training for pilots and their crews before being sent into actual combat. The object is to make the exercises as real and challenging as possible — to take the pilots, ground crews, mechanics, rescue personnel, etc., to the limits of what they can handle.

We follow our young pilot as he makes his way through this extraordinary event held in the desert of Nevada. He is amazed at how complex, confusing and dangerous the exercises are.

He also begins to notice team members who were absent from his childhood vision of heroism. There are people who work all night rebuilding engines and re-installing them into his aircraft so he can keep flying and training. There are people who rise at four-thirty each morning to scour the runways for tiny pebbles that can get sucked into engines and kill pilots. There are people who practice rushing into a flaming mockup of a crashed aircraft so if there is a real accident they will be ready to save the pilot. In the flying exercises, John realizes there are other pilots who aren’t just out to prove themselves — they are helping him — watching his back, taking personal risks to cover his mistakes. And he is doing the same for them.

He begins to think that being a hero is not quite as simple as he once believed. Captain John Stratton has gone on from Red Flag to serve three combat tours over Afghanistan and Iraq. Although he has seen much sacrifice and courage from other fighter pilots during his years in the Air Force, the extraordinary people he remembers are not just the pilots, but the whole team supporting from the ground as well as the entire USAF Air and Space Force.

Now, as Stratton reflects from the cockpit of his F-15, squinting out into the evening light across the vast blue sky, his wingman aboard an F-15 Eagle vanishes for a moment, and in his imagination another aircraft flies beside him. It is a beautiful blue Corsair, a glowing phantom from another age.

Discovery Wings - Flying Heavy Metal All 5 Eps

The US's fascination in aviation really took off in May 1927 when American Charles Lindbergh became the first person to successfully fly solo across the Atlantic. His historic flight from New York took 33.5 hours and on landing in Paris he was greeted by a cheering crowd of thousands. Lindbergh became an all-American hero; his achievement rekindled interest in aviation in the USA and commercial air transport began to flourish. By 1930 there were 43 scheduled airlines, although most still mainly carried post and not passengers.

The Second World War lead to more routes being flown to support military operations and to developments in engineering that would change the face of aviation. The General Electric Company in Boston produced an engine based on Frank Whittle's revolutionary design and it was used to power a jet aircraft for the first time in the US in 1942.

After the war, more and more airlines sprang up to cope with the growing demand for air transportation as people began to see it as an increasingly popular alternative to rail and sea travel. American aircraft manufacturing companies like Douglas, Lockheed and Boeing, gradually became the dominant forces in commercial aviation although they were slower to adopt jet technology than their European rivals. There was uncertainty as to the future of jetliners after the de Havilland Comet suffered a series of disasters some of which were attributed to problems with the aircraft.

In 1958, Boeing was the first American manufacturer to go full throttle with jetliners when it produced the 707 which was twice as heavy and could carry twice the number of passengers as the Comet. President Kennedy loved the 707 so much that he bought one and had it especially adapted to become the first ever Air Force One. Airlines loved them too; over 1,800 were built and some of these are still in service today in Latin America and Africa.

Boeing followed the 707 with the even more successful 727. Its advantage was that unlike its big brother the 727 could take-off and land on shorter runways which meant it could travel long and short-haul to many more destinations throughout the world. Then came the Boeing 747 'Jumbo Jet' which first took to the skies in 1969 and is still the largest passenger jet liner flying today.

America's quest for flight took things one step further in the 1960's when it entered the space race with the USSR. Rockets were developed to power space craft which could travel through the atmosphere and far beyond. The Space Shuttle was the first craft that could be re-furbished and used for several missions.

At the start of the 21st century American aviation was heading towards the development of sonic commercial aircraft that could reduce flying time by between 15-20%. The aircraft industry in the US was convinced that passengers wanted to travel faster between smaller airports rather than in larger jetliners which provided more space. But after the terrorist attack of September 11th 2001, passenger numbers dropped steeply and the commercial airline business suffered huge losses. This lead to a rethink and now the industry is concentrating mainly on cost effective, fuel efficient designs for the future.

Flying Heavy metal is a 5-part television series produced by Ricochet and broadcast (in the UK) and Europe on the Discovery Channel and subsequently repeated on Discovery Wings. It is presented by commercial Boeing 757 pilot and Iron Maiden frontman, Bruce Dickinson.

In the series, Bruce looks at and often flies a number of aircraft from across the history of commercial aviation. There are some quite surprising aerobatics done in rather large aircraft...

Oxford Flying Club was officially opened by the Mayor of Oxford in 1939. However, its life was initially rather short, and as the country prepared for war, restrictions placed on civil flying quickly curtailed its activities. Resurrected in 1947 and renamed the Oxford Aeroplane club, it gradually increased its fleet and reputation and, by 1960, had made the important transition from a club for private pilots to a fully-fledged flying school geared to the training of professional pilots.

As the parent company, Oxford Aviation, expanded, so too did the training offered by the school, and by 1961, when it merged with the Pressed Steel Co to become British Executive Air Services Ltd, Oxford was firmly established as one of the UK’s leading Flight Training Schools. Dedicated ground school buildings and student residential accommodation on site were quickly provided, and the first fully integrated Commercial Pilot’s Licence and Instrument Rating courses began in May 1962.

In 1963, the BEAS Flying Training Division was renamed Oxford Air Training School and the rest, so they say, is history. Forty two years later, over twenty thousand trained commercial pilots and aircraft engineers have graduated from the School and can be found flying for many of the world’s leading airlines. Despite a change of name to Oxford Aviation Academy (OAA) towards the end of the last decade, the quality and reputation of the training remains as high as ever and OAA is still universally recognised as one of the world’s premier Flight Training Organisations.

Because it is almost invisible to radar and carries an awesome array of weaponry the F-22 Raptor, America's fourth-generation fighter, gets superb innovation and fear factor ratings. However, the aircraft's prowess is compromised by its astronomical production costs and the fact it has some way to go to match the combat records of the F-15 and F-16. Therefore, in the kill ratio, production and service length categories, the Raptor scores zip, placing it firmly in 10th place on our list.

No. 9: Sea Harrier FA2
Manufacturer: British Aerospace

Top Speed: 736 mph
Armament: Two 30-mm Aden cannon, plus two AMRAAM and four Sidewinder missiles, two Harpoon or Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles

With its unrivaled ability to maneuver, hover and pop up from unexpected places, the Sea Harrier earns a solid fear factor rating. Its unique design and simple-to-produce airframe score well. Despite achieving a high kill ratio in the Falklands, the "jump jet's" slow speed makes it vulnerable to ground fire, which reduces its overall score. Though the aircraft is being phased out of frontline operations it still earns a respectable ninth place in our top 10 league.

No. 8: Sopwith Camel

Armament: Two Vickers .303 machine guns

Credited with destroying at least 1,200 enemy aircraft, the Sopwith Camel rightly deserves to be called one of the best fighters of all time. Its solid, if unspectacular, scoring across the board ensures its standing in eighth place on the list of the greatest fighters of all time.

No. 7: Me 262 Schwalbe
Manufacturer: Messerschmitt

Top Speed: 540 mph
Armament: Four 30mm MK-108 cannons

For innovation the "Swallow" scores maximum points. As the first of its kind, the Me 262 inspired equal measures of fear and admiration, so it also scores at the top of the scales in the fear factor category.

However, because the aircraft was difficult to build and it had notoriously unreliable engines, the aircraft's production rating is low - so too is its service record, having only been active for a little over two years. Nevertheless, the Me 262 will forever be in the record books as being the world's first fully operational jet fighter - a legend of the skies and the seventh greatest fighter of all time.

Used in all British theaters of conflict throughout the Second World War the Spitfire remains the unrivaled symbol of victory and Britain's finest hour. But the Spitfire is also famous for giving Field Marshall Erwin Rommel the scare of his life.

On July 17, 1944, in the north of France, a Canadian pilot named Charlie Fox shot at the car carrying the German military mastermind and knocked it off the road, putting Germany's "Desert Fox" out of commission.

Compared to today's fighters both these jets are underpowered and primitive but few aircraft have done so well at the job they were designed to do. Both the F-86 Sabre and MiG 15 were the right aircraft at the right time and each richly deserve a prominent place in aviation history.

Both designs relied heavily on captured German swept-wing technology and British engine design, so for innovation the MiG and Sabre are equally matched. Both fighters were produced in large numbers, but the MiG edges in front of the Sabre in the production category because of its renowned simplicity. Both jets have similar service records. The result? They are inseparable in the rankings: the MiG 15 and F-86 Sabre tie for fourth place

No. 3: F-4 Phantom

Armament: Four AIM 7 Sparrow and four AIM 9 Sidewinder missiles.

Produced in large numbers the F-4 Phantom has an unrivaled service history. But the aircraft really earns its third place ranking for being fast, durable and deadly.

Phantoms were the test bed for missile technology - and the aircraft held five speed records for an impressive 13 years before being beaten by the aircraft featured in the No. 2 spot on our list of the top 10 fighters of all time.

No. 2: F-15C Eagle

No other fighter in the history of aerial combat has a record that even comes close to the Eagle's. The F-15 is far superior to most of its brethren - way better than the F-4 - accelerating better, turning better, handling better.

In fact, such is the reputation of the F-15 that during the opening phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Saddam Hussein's air force simply refused to get in the air. They knew the F-15 would just knock them out of the sky.

No. 1: P-51D Mustang

Armament: Six wing-mounted .50-caliber machine guns

Fitted with external drop-tanks the Mustang's range was extended to almost 2,000 miles, making it the only Allied fighter capable of protecting the Allied bombers on long-range, deep-penetration raids.

The Mustang performed its job so well that after its introduction in 1944, casualty rates for bomber crews were reduced by 75 percent. In fact, American P51s destroyed almost 5,000 enemy aircraft in Europe - making it the highest scoring U. S. fighter in the European theater of operations.
